Know About Your Health

How much do you know about your health? Are you health conscious enough? Health is something invaluable that money can’t buy. One of the ways to determine your health status is through health screening. Regular screening helps in detecting early stages of diseases such as heart attacks, hepatitis, diabetes, cancer, and etc, which are of asymptomatic or does not show any early symptoms until it reaches its chronic stages where usually is too late to be cured.

In general, a comprehensive health screening involves the evaluation of the patient’s medical history, and laboratory tests such as urine test, and blood test. Blood test is essential to identify certain diseases previously unknown to the patients including symptomatic and asymptomatic diseases such as cancer, hepatitis, and HIV. Also, it helps in early detection of certain health complications, as well as the functionality of internal organs which are unable to detect through physical examination, so that the identified complication (if any) could be treated more effectively before it worsens. Therefore it is crucial for one to do routine screening once, or up to three times, a year, depending on the age and health status of an individual for health care purposes.

  • Full Blood Picture to detect white blood cell and red blood cell disorders. Lack of red blood cell may lead to anemia, while the lack of white blood cell can lead to leukemia.

  • Hepatitis B test to detect Hepatitis B infection and hepatitis immunity level. Hepatitis is caused by liver infection by the hepatitis virus. Hepatitis carriers are advised to see the doctor as frequent as once every 6 months for a blood test to observe the liver condition.

  • Blood Cholesterol Level test is important to determine the cholesterol level in your blood. For those above the age of 20 are advised to do fasting blood lipid profile at least once every five years. This profile measures the level of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol) and triglyceride. As high level of LDL and triglyceride leads to cardiovascular diseases, hence lower reading is preferable. On the other hand, HDL protects you from contracting cardiovascular diseases; hence, higher reading is preferable. For optimum accuracy of the full blood lipid test, it should be done after 10-12 hours of fasting, so it’s better to be done in the morning.

  • Kidney Function test is to detect kidney failure, bone, or paratiroid disease, while the Liver Function test is to detect any abnormality of the liver. Patient must fast for 10-12 hours before blood sample is taken. However, drinking water is allowed during the fasting.

  • The microalbumin and HbA1c tests are done for those who are diabetic, or hypertensive. Urine sample is taken for the microalbumin test, while blood sample is taken from either the arm or the finger tip for the HbA1c test. Both tests help patients to control the complications of the disease.
