Pimple is also called acne, and this common skin problem is mainly due to hair follicles and sebaceous glands. When the openings of the hair follicles are over-keratinised and the sebaceous glands produce a lot of sebum, causing excess oil, dead skin cells and other things to build up in the pores. When a proliferation of bacteria accompanies this, the hair follicles become inflamed, and acnes are formed in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules and others. Pimples can occur on skin areas such as the face, back, chest and shoulders. Pimples usually occur around the ages of 12 to 25, but the truth is that you can get pimples at any age.

We generally believe that an improper diet can cause pimples. For example, we have all heard that eating fried food will lead to pimples; however, many people still cannot control the annoying pimples on their faces even though they have reduced the consumption of all kinds of fried food. In fact, several factors trigger pimples, including family genetics, lifestyle, hormonal changes, diet and medication side effects. In terms of lifestyle, including lack of sleep, stress, use of oily cosmetics and skin care products, and applying oily hair care products are all causes of pimples.

The correct view on diet is that diet alone cannot completely prevent or cause pimples, but while certain foods may worsen pimple conditions, some foods can function as a supplement to keep skin healthy. Most people believe that the intake of fried foods is the main culprit in pimple growth. However, studies have shown that sugary foods are more likely to contribute to pimple formation than greasy foods. Nevertheless, fried foods are usually high in sugar as well. Studies have shown that high sugar and high glycemic index foods when ingested, cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. Long-term high blood sugar and insulin levels can lead to inflammation of the body, hyperkeratosis of the epidermis, or stimulation of the sebaceous glands to secrete more oil, leading to worsening of pimples. Moreover, some studies have also pointed out that there is a close link between dairy products and pimples, and they speculate that certain hormones in milk may exacerbate inflammation and pore-clogging in the body, worsening pimples. In fact, eating foods high in fibre such as vegetables, fruits, and low glycemic index foods can help reduce pimples and help maintain healthy skin.

The relationship between food and pimples varies from person to person because everyone's skin condition is different. Although diet can sometimes affect pimples, pimples are also caused by many factors. We can avoid pimples by observing whether there is a temporal causal relationship between an individual's diet and pimples. Keeping the skin clean is more important in reducing pimples than controlling diet, and avoiding squeezing which can cause infection and scarring. If diet, lifestyle and skincare do not improve pimples, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist.
