Ever experienced this? You had a good night’s sleep and woke up refreshed, but the moment lunch is over, you start yawning and all you want is just a nap. That post-lunch drowsiness actually has a name in the medical field, and is known as postprandial somnolence or food coma.
When you eat oily, sugary, or heavy meals, your body has to work extra hard to digest the food. This can cause your blood sugar to fluctuate, which leaves you feeling drowsy and low on energy.
● It can cause bloating, indigestion, or acid reflux
● It can lead to constipation
● It can make it easier for extra calories to be stored as fat, which can lead to weight gain
Instead, get up and move around a little after meals. After a 15-minute rest, go for a short 10–15 minute walk. It helps with digestion, balances your blood sugar, and controls your weight goals.
Feeling sleepy after eating is not a sign of laziness. It is your body giving you signals. With the right diet and a bit of post-meal movement, you can shake off that food coma and stay sharp all day!
